Highway Improvement (Continued from Page 1) Since 1956, Mr. Jackson said, more than $11,000,000 has been spent on Highway 64 east of Ral I eigh. The present projects will increase the total to more than $26,000,000. i The speaker paid special compll | ments to Cliff Benson of Raleigh, who is highway commissioner for this area. He cited Mr. Benson as “an outstanding man,” and said | the area is fortunate to have him as its representative. Relating some history of the state highway system, Mr. Jackson said North Carolina was the first ! state to put all its roads under state control. The system includes ! 71,000 miles of roads, all financed i by the highway fund. No money | has been borrowed for the high | way system in 10 years, he said, | and no increase in the basic gaso line tax has been made in 30 years. Included in North Carolina highways are 12,800 miles in the primary system. Improvements in Card of Thanks I would like to thank everyone , for the prayers, flowers, cards, visits and all the other many nice things done for me during my recent two stays in the hospital. Words cannot express how much your thoughtfulness has meant to me. I Hilda P. Cunningham Invitation Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Alien Kimball invite the public to at tend the marriage and reception ol their daughter, Betty Jean, to Barbee Gene Fuller on Sunday, September 8, at four o’clock in Wakefield Baptist Church. The reception will be held in the Assembly Hall of the church. the primary system are supported by 50% Federal money, but all maintenance must be done at state expense. The secondary system—farm to market, school bus, and similar rural roads—adds 59,000 miles to the state system. Half of the secondary system is paved. The new interstate system, which is built with 90% federal funds, includes 770 miles in North Carolina. This system is about 45% completed. Though Federal money aids in construction of the interstate system, the state must finance all maintenance. By eliminating diversions of funds from highways to other projects, the state has been able to increase the amount spent for secondary road projects. During a brief question and answer period following his talk, Mr. Jackson answered questions pertaining to the quality of “Scott” Toads (they’re good); time scheduled for hearings on the Zebulon by-pass (next Spring, possibly; and the datf contracts will be let for the Zebulon by pass (a pure guess set it at least a year in the future). Rotary Club President Sidney Eddins complimented the speaker on bringing the informative pro gram, and commended Program Chairman Davis on the series of programs on municipal, county, and state government and the ser vices provided by each. Card of Thanks I am deeply grateful to every one for the continued prayers, visits, gifts, flowers and cards while I was hospitalized and dur ing my convalesence at home.
